I received deodorant. Nothing says “Happy 13th Birthday” to a shy, self-conscious, young girl, like deodorant given by a grandma who is visited a few times each year. After that 4.5 hr drive, each way, sitting in the backseat, with a little sister who is in that puts-her-finger-so-very-close-without-actually-touching phase, and who’s father is in that enjoying country music phase (aka: his entire life) while ENTHUSIASTICALLY singing along, so very very very out of tune, AND controlling the radio (as he’s driving (family driving hierarchy))(thus my DISLIKE of country music (a few songs/ singers exempt, though, like “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” & it’s fifty sequels)), AND this being BEFORE Walkmans. Though, being as it’s a SPECIAL birthday, the deodorant was the special Avon’s deodorant .
Keep in perspective, that this is the SAME grandma who, in the holiday & birthday cards, included updates on who’s recently deceased. Like in my 18th birthday card, where it included “do you remember “His Name”? The boy who’s mother shared a hospital room with your Mom, when you were born, & who was born five minutes before you? Well, a week ago, he shot himself in the head & died.” (a girl had broken up with him. - kinda a "Happy 18th Birthday, at least you’re not dead/ at least you didn’t kill yourself/ DO NOT kill yourself (lest ye be included in someone else’s Birthday, Christmas, or other holiday card)).
Last Christmas, I put a 1oz bar of Gold in my wife’s stocking. She initially thought it was a fake, meant as a joke. Once she realized it was real, she certainly upped her rating.
@accelerator Nice!
Way back in the 90’s I went through a gold bug phase and bought 20 gold eagles for US$300 each. Now they’re selling for over US$4K .
(Of course, I realize that they haven’t really gained that in real terms - the US dollar has just declined that much. )
I received a great pillow one year. Being bed bound at the time I thought it was the best gift ever!

So, deodorant…
Underwear. I was always ready in case I got hurt or something and had to disrobe. Can’t go to the hospital looking like a slouch!
